Hotel tax by country
The map
Darker means more is added at checkout, on top of the price you were quoted. It does not mean more tax: in most of Europe and in Japan the tax is already inside the rate you compared, which is why some heavily taxed countries sit at the light end. Hotel charges like resort fees are never in the colour, because no government sets them.
True Trip CostsGovernment charges only. Checked .
Added on top of the quoted rate, by government
Hatching means the rate varies too much inside the country for one national figure. Specks mean the charge is a flat fee per night, converted at one declared room rather than measured as a percentage. Hairlines mean there is a charge we have checked but not yet put on this scale. Grey never means untaxed: it means we have not checked it yet. The reference room behind the modelled colours, and every country's sourced and dated figures, are on the full map.
Government hotel and tourist taxes added on top of a quoted room rate, each country sourced and dated.
