Paying for the E-Ticket$0 to $0
File it yourself at eticket.migracion.gob.do. It takes minutes.
It is free on the official government site. Lookalike sites charge $20 to $50 to type the same details into the same form, and they rank above the real one because the government does not buy ads.
Your own bank's foreign fees
A no-foreign-fee card takes the card percentage to $0; the ATM operator's own flat fee is separate and still applies.
Most US cards add a percentage on what you buy and on the cash you pull, plus a few dollars per ATM withdrawal. Nothing about that is a cost of the trip; it is a cost of the card you happened to bring.
Paying in dollars at the terminal$0 to $0
Choose DOP every time, at a till and at an ATM.
Dynamic currency conversion lets the machine set its own rate on top of any fee, and it runs about 3 to 8 percent on whatever you put on the card. It is the single easiest charge on this page to refuse, and it costs nothing to say no.
Prepare aheadGet ready before you go.
Traveling with a pet
You can't just fly a pet in and out. Most countries need a microchip, a current rabies shot and a health certificate, and bringing your pet back into the US has its own rules. Start the vet paperwork weeks ahead: miss it and your pet can be refused at the border.
We haven't finished checking pet entry requirements for Dominican Republic, and we won't guess. We only tell you a country's specifics when we are 100 percent sure and current. Still working on this one. Want us to tell you the moment it's done?
Sales tax on what you buy
A health condition while traveling
Your US health plan likely won't cover you abroad, and a condition that needs attention needs a plan: carry enough medication, know it may have a different name in Dominican Republic, and confirm your travel insurance covers a pre-existing condition, since many don't by default.
Your hotel price, mapped
Already inside the rate you paid
You booked through a site, so its cut is buried in the rate, invisible on your bill. Booking the same room direct can bring that out, worth a two-minute check, not a rule that always wins.
Still landing on top
Resort fee, where charged: about $25 to $55 a night. Most hotels charge none. This is the typical range to check your own rate against, not a figure for your booking.
Parking, where charged: about $15 to $70 a night. Often free, often skippable. A range to check, not a cost we can read from your room rate.
A refundable deposit hold. Not a cost, but your card can feel it for a few days. Varies by property.
We put a dollar figure only where we can stand behind it: the tax, because it follows from what you paid. The rest we name as typical ranges, because they swing too much by property to state as yours. That is the honest line, not a limitation.

Airbnb and short-term rental fees
The nightly rate isn't the bill: a flat cleaning fee plus the platform's roughly 15 percent service fee stack on top, which hits short stays hardest, and tourist tax is sometimes collected in cash on arrival.
Open the full price breakdown and compare it against a hotel before you book. Short-term-rental rules also vary by city and change often, so check locally.

Tipping on top of a service charge
Read the bill first. Where the charge is on it, that is the tip.
A service charge is always added to the bill in Dominican Republic, so a tip on top of it is paying for service twice. We put no figure on this one, because what you would have added is up to you.
The airport or hotel exchange desk
Withdraw from a bank ATM instead, and never change cash at the airport.
Exchange counters make their money on the spread rather than on a stated fee, which is why we publish no percentage for it: it moves by counter, by hour and by note. The rule is what is reliable, not the number.
The card carried away to a back terminal
Ask for the card machine to come to the table, or walk to the counter yourself, rather than letting a server carry your card away.
Tampered card readers can quietly save card details during an otherwise legitimate purchase.
The unagreed taxi fare
Settle the fare out loud before the door closes, every time, since Dominican taxis run no meters, or use Uber, DiDi or inDrive in the cities.
With no meter, the fare is either what you agreed before the door closed or whatever the driver says on arrival.
The street money changer
Use bank ATMs or a licensed casa de cambio rather than a street money changer, where counterfeit notes and short-changing are real risks.
Street changers carry a real counterfeit and short-changing risk.
The "pirate lawyer" near tourist police stations
If anything goes wrong, contact your embassy first; unofficial "pirate lawyers" charge excessive fees to help detained foreigners.
Unofficial lawyers wait near tourist police stations offering help to detained foreigners at excessive fees.
Your phone plan abroad
The rental counter insurance upsell
Decline the counter CDW only after you have checked what you already have; you can often buy the same cover for less, or already own it.
At the counter you will be pushed collision damage waiver (CDW/LDW) and 'excess reduction' add-ons, often around $15 to $40 a day, framed against a scary excess (the amount you owe if the car is damaged: roughly up to $2,500 in the US, about 950 to 1,500 euros or pounds in Europe, more in Australia). Before you accept, three things are usually true. First, your credit card may already include rental CDW, but you must check your card's own current benefit guide: coverage differs by card, is often secondary, has duration limits, and excludes some countries (Italy, Ireland, Australia, Israel and Jamaica are common exclusions), so confirm YOUR card for YOUR destination rather than assuming. Second, if you are not covered, a standalone excess policy (bought from an independent insurer, not the counter) is usually far cheaper, often under $8 a day versus the counter's $15 to $40. Third, personal accident and personal effects add-ons usually duplicate health and home insurance you already have. The one cover a card's CDW does NOT include is third-party liability, so if your rental does not include enough of that, it is the one worth genuinely considering.
Each line stands alone. We never add these into one total, because money you were never going to spend is not a saving. Your whole trip runs about $0 to $0. See the full breakdown

Getting thereNot included
The round-trip airfare you gave in step 5, if any. Paid in dollars at booking, so it carries no foreign-transaction fee.
Watch out for
Bags, seats, and change fees are the avoidable part, not the fare.
The fare already covers the mandatory part. Bags, seats, and the right to change your mind are optional, and every airline strips a different amount out to get there. What your fare doesn’t include
Paying in dollars does not dodge your card’s foreign fee.
The fee attaches to a foreign merchant, not to whatever currency shows on the receipt, so billing in dollars does not exempt the charge. Why dollars don’t dodge it
There is no magic day or trick that reliably drops the fare.
The studies disagree with each other on the best day and the best advance window, and that disagreement is itself the finding: no single number is worth planning a purchase around. What actually makes a flight cheaper
Prepare ahead
If the airline cancels, you are owed cash, not a voucher.
US rules already owe you an automatic refund to your original payment method if you decline the rebooking, voucher, or credit the airline offers instead. What your airline owes you

Three kinds of information. Your figures, our estimates and sourced rules are labeled separately. Whether a cost is in the total is a different label.
Modeling assumptions
- People and rooms are counted separately. This estimate does not assume a specific number of rooms for your party.
- Every priced night of the stay is treated the same; there is no separate arrival- or departure-day adjustment.
- Changing your travel style will not replace a flight or room price you have already entered; only typing a new figure does.
- This estimate uses one room throughout the stay. If your own booking has more than one room, check the count and enter the combined nightly price on the accommodation step.

These carry no dollar figure by design: each is named because it is real, and there is nothing honest to price here.
Departure tax is not a separate line here. Where a country charges one it is collected inside your airfare, so it is already in the flight figure, and adding it again would count it twice.
On the ground detailyour room, your days, and how much of it is cash
Whether at an ATM or a card terminal in a shop or restaurant, always choose to be charged in the local currency, not dollars. Paying in dollars (called dynamic currency conversion) lets the machine set its own, worse, exchange rate on top of any fee.

Rough guide, not a quote. The percentage here is a blended stand-in for a typical US card's foreign fee, not your exact rate. The real number moves with the card you carry: one no-foreign-fee card can cover both sides, while a plain rewards credit card only removes the fee on what you buy, and cash still costs a little unless that card also waives ATM and foreign-cash fees. A debit card, or accepting the "pay in dollars" (dynamic currency conversion) offer at a till or ATM, can push it higher. Rates checked Jun 2026 and rounded.
