Taxis in Sweden, and the price sticker

Sweden deregulated taxis, so most are fine but a few rogue cabs charge wild rates, especially at the airport. The trick is the yellow comparison-price sticker, or just use an app. Here is how it works.

Rogue taxis, check the price sticker

The short answer

Install Uber or Bolt, which both work in the cities, and reputable firms like Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir and Sverigetaxi are safe bets. Sweden deregulated taxis, so fares vary a lot and a few rogue cabs charge extortionate rates, especially at Arlanda and tourist spots. Every taxi must show a yellow comparison-price sticker in the window: check it, or just use an app that shows the fare. Tipping is not expected, and Sweden is nearly cashless.

Which app to install

Uber and Bolt both operate in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo, and the established firms Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir and Sverigetaxi are reputable and fair.

Using an app or a known company is the simplest way to sidestep the one real issue in Sweden, the rogue independent taxi, since the price is set or known in advance.

From Arlanda airport

From Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), the Arlanda Express is the fast train, while the commuter train and the Flygbussarna coach are cheaper ways into the city.

If you want a taxi, the reputable firms offer a fixed fare to central Stockholm (often around 500 to 700 kronor), booked at their desk. This is exactly where rogue taxis lurk, so do not jump into an unknown cab at the rank.

Check the comparison-price sticker

Because taxis are deregulated, fares vary a lot and a small number of rogue cabs charge wildly high rates, the classic Stockholm airport and tourist trap.

Your protection: by law, every taxi must display a yellow comparison-price sticker (jamforpris) in the rear window, showing the price for a standard trip. If that number looks high, walk away. Simpler still, use an app or a known firm, where the fare is set or fair.

Fares, paying and tipping

Fares are paid by card or Swish, as Sweden is nearly cashless. Tipping is not expected, so at most round up for good service.
