The pandemic-era Bahamas Health Travel Visa was discontinued, so despite older pages mentioning it, there is no digital form to complete before you fly. You are stamped in on arrival, up to eight months for tourism, with the officer setting the length.
At the airport you fill a short immigration card and make an oral customs declaration, both quick. Each traveler, including children, needs their own passport.
The passport rule: book to fly, card to cruise
This is the point that catches people. To fly to the Bahamas, US citizens need a passport book. A passport card is only valid for cruise and sea arrivals, not for flying, so a cruise passenger can use a card, but if you fly home you cannot. When in doubt, travel with the book.
The Bahamas does not enforce the six-month-validity rule on US citizens, your passport need only be valid for your stay, but airlines may set their own validity rules, so check with your carrier.
The onward ticket, and a handy perk
Immigration can ask for a return or onward ticket, where you are staying, and proof of funds, so have them ready, visa-free does not guarantee entry. Yellow fever vaccination is required only if you are arriving from a risk country.
One genuine perk: Nassau's airport has US pre-clearance, so you clear US immigration and customs before you board your flight home and arrive in the US as a domestic passenger, which saves time on connections.
A couple of notes
Visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits, not working, which needs a permit. For a stay beyond what you were granted, or an extension, the Bahamas Department of Immigration is the authority.
