Across Australia and New Zealand you can tap a card or phone for almost everything, from city cafes to country towns, and you can go days without touching cash. The money quirks here are about fees and entry costs rather than cash: card surcharges are the thing to watch, Australia is switching them off from 1 October 2026 while New Zealand still allows them, and both countries want a cheap travel authorization arranged and paid before you fly.

One rule holds in both places: always pay in the local currency, never US dollars, on any card terminal or ATM, and let your own bank do the conversion.
