Sweden cut grocery VAT from 12% to 6%

From 1 April 2026, Sweden cut the VAT on most groceries from 12% to 6%, a temporary reduction scheduled to run to the end of 2027. Restaurant and cafe meals stayed at 12%, as did hotel stays.

Why it matters: VAT is already in the displayed price, so nothing changes about how you pay; a supermarket receipt just runs slightly cheaper than you might expect.
