Do US citizens need a visa for Dubai and the UAE?

US passport holders need nothing in advance. You arrive, present your passport and onward ticket, and immigration stamps a free visa on arrival, no form and no fee. A single entry covers all seven emirates, so one stamp is good for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the rest.

Because it is free and automatic, ignore any site offering to sell you a UAE tourist visa. Those pre-arranged visit visas exist for nationalities that are not granted a visa on arrival, which does not include US citizens on a regular passport.

This is the one point even recent guides get wrong. For years the free visa on arrival was 30 days, and many articles still say so. More recently the UAE Embassy has cited up to 90 days within any 180-day period for US citizens. The sources genuinely disagree, so the only safe move is to check the length written into your stamp when you land, and plan around that.

Whatever you are given, do not overstay: since February 2026 the UAE charges a flat AED 50 per day (about $14) overstay fine with no grace period. Extensions are possible before you expire, through the UAE's ICP or GDRFA portals for a fee.

Two passport points to know. First, validity: your passport must be valid at least six months from your date of entry, and this is strictly enforced, you can be denied boarding if it is short, so check before booking. You also want a blank page.

Second, and less known: the UAE government does not accept US passports with the "X" gender marker for travel to, through or within the country, and affected travelers have been denied boarding or entry. If that applies to you, confirm your options with the UAE Embassy before you book.

The visa on arrival covers tourism and business visits, not working or studying, which need a sponsored residence or work visa and an after-arrival medical exam. Longer tourist stays mean extending, or leaving and re-entering once your 180-day window resets.
