Mexico: the two taxes on a hotel room, now stated and modeled
We added the 16% federal IVA and the state lodging tax (typically 2 to 5%, and 5% in Quintana Roo) to the guide and its calculator. The guide had understated both. We also recorded that Quintana Roo now actively scans VISITAX QR codes at airport departure.
Why it matters: A Mexican room rate can carry roughly a fifth in tax on top, and in the Cancun area the roughly 16 dollar VISITAX is now genuinely checked on the way out.
